Example FBA profit model
This sample shows why Amazon sellers should include fulfillment, referral fees, ads, and return loss before judging a product.
| Line item | Example value | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Selling price | $39.99 | Use the expected live price, not only MSRP |
| Product cost | $10.50 | Supplier quote per unit |
| Inbound shipping | $1.20 | Freight or prep cost allocated per unit |
| Referral fee | $6.00 | 15% planning rate on $39.99 |
| FBA fulfillment fee | $5.40 | Estimate from size tier |
| Advertising cost | $4.00 | Launch PPC allowance per sale |
| Expected return loss | $0.48 | Return rate x loss per returned unit |
| Estimated net profit | $12.41 | Margin is about 31.0% |
This is a planning example. Confirm current Amazon category fees, FBA fees, and marketplace rules before ordering inventory.

Download the free Amazon FBA profit calculator CSV template
Open it in Excel or Google Sheets, replace the sample numbers, and check whether an FBA SKU still has enough margin after referral fees, fulfillment, ads, and returns.
Includes selling price, product cost, referral fee, FBA fee, ads, return loss, profit margin, ROI, and break-even price.
Why Amazon sellers need a profit spreadsheet
A free Amazon FBA profit calculator spreadsheet is useful because it makes every cost line visible before you order inventory or launch ads. Many sellers start with a simple product-cost calculation, but Amazon profit is not product cost minus selling price. Referral fees, FBA fulfillment, inbound shipping, storage, advertising, coupons, returns, and exchange-rate movement can all reduce the money left from each sale.
A spreadsheet is especially helpful during product research. You can create one tab for each supplier quote, one tab for each price point, or one copy for each marketplace. That gives you a repeatable model instead of a rough mental estimate.
The goal is not to predict every future cost perfectly. The goal is to avoid the obvious mistakes: underestimating Amazon fees, ignoring return loss, forgetting PPC, and buying inventory that only works under the most optimistic assumptions.
What the Amazon FBA template includes
The template includes the main inputs most sellers need for a first-pass Amazon FBA profit model: selling price, product cost, inbound shipping, referral fee rate, FBA fulfillment fee, storage and other fees, advertising cost per sale, return rate, and loss per returned unit.
It also includes output columns for referral fee, expected return loss, total cost, net profit, profit margin, ROI, and break-even price. These are the numbers that help you decide whether a product deserves deeper research.
For example, a product can look profitable at a $39.99 selling price if you only include product cost. Once you add a 15% referral fee, a $5.40 FBA fee, $4.00 in ad spend, and a small return allowance, the true margin can be much lower.
How to use the template step by step
First, download the CSV template and open it in Excel or Google Sheets. Replace the sample SKU with your product idea, then enter the selling price and supplier cost. If you do not know the exact cost yet, use a conservative estimate.
Second, enter inbound shipping and fulfillment assumptions. Inbound shipping should be the cost allocated to one sellable unit. FBA fulfillment fee should come from your size tier estimate or Seller Central fee tools when available.
Third, enter the referral fee rate. If you are doing rough screening, a 15% placeholder is common for many categories, but you should replace it with the correct category rate before ordering inventory.
Fourth, add advertising and return assumptions. New sellers often skip these lines, but they can decide whether the product survives launch. If a product only works with zero ads and zero returns, it is probably too fragile.
Formula examples for the spreadsheet
A simple referral fee formula is: referral fee = selling price x referral fee rate. If your category has a minimum referral fee, use the larger of the percentage fee or the minimum fee.
A simple net profit formula is: net profit = selling price - product cost - inbound shipping - referral fee - FBA fee - storage and other fees - advertising cost - expected return loss.
Profit margin is net profit divided by selling price. ROI is net profit divided by product cost plus inbound shipping. Break-even price is the selling price where net profit becomes zero after the fee stack is included.
When the online calculator is better than the spreadsheet
Use the spreadsheet when you want to save scenarios, compare suppliers, or share a simple model with a partner. It is good for product research sessions where you test many possible SKUs.
Use the online Amazon FBA Profit Calculator when you want a faster answer, a cleaner breakdown, or a shareable result. The calculator is also easier when you are changing inputs quickly and want the profit, margin, ROI, and break-even price to update immediately.
A good workflow is to start with the online calculator, then use the spreadsheet for the few product ideas that pass the first screen. If a SKU looks weak in both places, do not force it. The numbers are telling you something.
Next step: calculate the real FBA margin
