Etsy Fee CalculatorExample order model
Imagine an Etsy item sells for $34 with $5 shipping charged. The seller pays $11 product and labor cost, $1.20 packaging, $4.80 shipping, marketplace fees, payment fees, and $3.50 ad cost.
The order can still be profitable, but the real margin is much lower than the difference between price and product cost.
Why ad cost changes the answer
If the same product sells organically, it may produce a healthy margin. If every sale needs paid promotion, the margin can fall quickly.
Model both organic and paid scenarios. This helps you decide how much you can spend to acquire a buyer without turning a strong product into a weak one.
Use margin by product type
Group products by similar cost structure. Digital downloads, handmade jewelry, print-on-demand, and custom items should not share one generic margin assumption.
A product with lower margin but less support may still be more attractive than a high-touch custom product.
